Alley’s Restaurant Currumbin RSL Queensland

Well after a big day out at the shops or theme parks the first thing we look for is someone else to cook, so we loaded up the 3 teenagers into the van and headed out to the Currumbin RSL, Currumbin Creek Road Currumbin.

First impressions, anywhere I need to book might be expensive, but the drinks are all discounted.

The atmosphere is pleasant and the staff friendly, we had to wait as it was busy on a Thursday night, but only about 15 minutes. Looking around I noted that the patrons ranged from younger adults to families and retirees, this place has all the markets covered.

Starters:

Now the test we looked at the menus and noticed a damper with whipped herb butter, we gave that a try as a starter ($4.50) and followed with mains. currumbin-rsl-26-june-2008-012.jpg

Mains:

For mains my wife chose the stuffed chicken breast and vegetables ($24.00), the girls chose the entree sized lamb cutlets ($15.50 each), the boy a pizza with ham and cheese on a tomato base(14.90) and I lashed out on the seafood medley ($25.00) we added a large serve of chips ($6.00)in case the kids did not have enough.

When the damper arrived it did not last too long, it was light but had a good flavour the herbed whipped butter was a good match.

Next came the mains and they did not disappoint, the girls lamb cutlets came as 2 large trimmed cutlets with rice and rocket leaves it had a light sauce over it. From what the girls said the lamb was pink and tender, the sides where ok but the rice really had no flavour and did not really compliment the lamb. With that said there was not much left on the plates.

The chicken breast came with a generous serve of backed king Edward pumpkin and a dijonaise type sauce, the chicken was filled with ham and the serve was more than ample. It proved to be too much for my wife.

The pizza was a thin crust gourmet type pizza it went down as well as the cutlets and the boy was happy.

The chips had what appeared to be a beer batter and they to went down well.

The seafood medley was large but I was a bit disappointed, the menu stated fresh local prawns and oysters and pickled mussels, along with barramundi fillets and crumbed prawns and callimari and local scallops. The serve had been counted out exactly, the prawns appeared fresh so to the oysters, the mussels had no real flavour. The fried components left me wondering if they had not been made from frozen products, especially the scallops they did not have the flavour or texture of something local and fresh.

Dessert:

For dessert we decided to try the dessert sampler, a small creme brulee, some stewed rhubarb, a individual pecan pie and biscotti and fresh cream. This was the redeemer for the main for me, the creme brulee was light and delicate, the rhubarb was sweet with flakes of sugar plate and the pecan pie was fresh and just right. The biscotti was bought and the cream was the expected double.

All in all I would recommend the Currumbin RSL for those looking for a good value meal with good service and a wonderful atmosphere. Also if you take up a $9.00 membership you get 10% of your bill. This was great value and the kids are all full, those with teenagers will understand thisĀ  as a good measure of the meal. This is the first outing for the new Executive chef Mark Davis the menu is all new and prepared with local produce from the Tweed Valley.
