Coming Soon – The Great European Truffle Famine?

Published by at 12:44 pm under Food News

Without sounding terribly bourgeois, (and I’m not usually a avid fan of truffle infused food) one of my favourite meals I still remember was with truffles, a truffle and blue cheese pasta I had a few years back in Tuscany. And it wasn’t even mine but my partner’s, but I ended up stealing half of it anyway given my meal was a bit more ordinary!

Truffle Pig - When roasted the pork is truffle infused automatically!

So I’m pretty sad to see that Piedmont truffles are under threat from a Chinese invader. Worse the Chinese variety looks the same, but has virtually no taste!

Still, I have to wonder if Italy’s woes will be Australia’s gain, given the growth of truffle farming in Oz.

In any case I will be visiting the South of France this August, and I hope to write back from a truffle market there, to get a local view on the problem.

Hmmmmmmmmmm Truffle flavoured pork, I would really like to know when the former truffle porkers go on the chopping block.
